Why We Love Baseball

A curated article written by Mark Newman for MLB

A record 76 million fans attended Major League Baseball games in 2006, and all signs point toward yet another single-season mark in 2007. On this Valentine’s Day, MLB.com decided to investigate this torrid love affair more closely by asking people around the game this simple question: “Why do you love baseball?”

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter: “I think because everybody can relate. You don’t have to be seven feet tall; you don’t have to be a certain size to play. Baseball is up and down. I think life’s like that sometimes, you know. Back and forth, up and down, you’re going through this grind. I think people like watching it. Baseball’s like a soap opera every day.”

Ernie Banks, Cubs legend and Hall of Famer: “It’s just life. When I think about baseball, it’s just life. It’s really the way life is. It requires a lot of mental capacity to be involved in it. It creates a lot of joy for people and memories for people who follow it. It’s a family. You like it because it’s a family. You started with it and know all these people — it’s family, it’s friends, it’s fun, it’s a beautiful game. All in all, baseball is amazing. I wish everybody could play it for at least two years. I wish everybody — men and women.”

Indians manager Eric Wedge: “The game gets inside you. It becomes a part of who you are, and you don’t know anything different. It’s just something you feel passionate about. If you really feel that strong about something and you feel something that special, it’s really hard to put it into words. For me, the love of the game is a given. It’s been the one constant that I’ve known, for as far back as I can remember.”

A’s general manager Billy Beane: “What I love is that when it is Valentine’s Day you’re getting real close to going to Arizona and to me there is something real pure about Spring Training. Most of us are getting out of a long winter, and it’s nice to get outside and be in the sunshine in February. To me, Spring Training is my favorite time of year for baseball. It’s the most relaxing time as an executive.”

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard: “I think it’s just the overall atmosphere: to be able to come out in the summer, nice weather — you can bring your kids and make it a family event. People just can come out and have fun.”

Joel Kweskin, 56, White Sox fan based in Charlotte, N.C.: “It’s unique unto itself. Football, basketball and hockey are variations of the same concept — back and forth in a linear progression to score a goal. Baseball, however, is mapped out on the field unlike any other sport. A running back or return specialist can run 100 yards, tops; a baserunner legging out an inside-the-park homer runs 20 yards farther. Baseball is the most democratic of sports — any size can play, and because the ball is not controlled by the offense but rather the defense, every player at any given time is involved in a play. Along with the anecdotally accepted premise that hitting a pitched baseball is the single most difficult thing to do in sports, so might be fielding a 175-mph line drive or grounder down the line. I love baseball because it is the greatest game ever invented.”

Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon: “Makes you feel like a kid again every day, you do it every day. And that’s what makes it so attractive.”

Giants bench coach Ron Wotus: “Baseball has always been in my blood, and there’s nothing like being on grass outdoors, playing the game. It’s a great feeling just to hit the ball and have some success. The pace is slower and it’s a thinking man’s game, and there are so many different facets of it. And because so many people have played it, from Little League on up, they can still give their opinion on what’s happening on the field, what kind of pitch should be thrown next.”

Former Royals star Willie Wilson: “The first thing is, I don’t think there’s any criteria for size, so anybody can play. I think people can relate. A lot of people never played football; basketball, you’ve gotta be tall and be able to jump. But baseball is a game where you pick up a bat and a ball, and you catch it, you swing the bat and you hit the ball. Most people have played softball or some kind of baseball, so they can relate to the sport. For me, that’s why I think America just embraces baseball, man.”

A’s outfielder Milton Bradley: “I just love getting together with a group of 25 guys and everybody is working together on a common goal. I like competition whatever the sport. Baseball for me is the hardest thing to do. That’s why I ventured into baseball. It’s more difficult than any other sport and I just liked the difficulty of it. I like a challenge.”

Cyn Donnelly, 38-year-old Boston author of Red Sox Chick, the most popular fan-written MLBlog: “I love baseball because my parents love baseball and even as a kid I knew it could be something that connected us no matter what else was going on in our lives. I love watching young players come up, I love watching mediocre players do well, even if only for a game. I love watching a struggling player come out of a slump. I love seeing the unexpected, which happens an awful lot in baseball. Unlike any of the other major sports, baseball gives a team many chances to do well. In a three-game series with the opposing team, you can lose one game and still come out of the series up. It makes every minute of the game ‘important’. Baseball is a wonderful diversion from my real life. Especially when my real life isn’t going quite the way I planned.”

Royals outfielder David DeJesus: “It’s such a team game. You can’t rely on one guy to win the game. You build relationships, you make good friends out here, and you’re having fun with 25 guys from different places all over the country. I grew up loving it because my Dad always loved it. We practiced together, we watched baseball games together, so it’s one of those things I’ve always been around.”

Royals outfielder Joey Gathright: “I can’t really put it into words. It’s not something I really grew up around in Mississippi. All they do is play football. But, when I was a kid, I was in awe of Rickey Henderson and Ken Griffey Jr., so I just fell in love with those guys and later I fell in love with baseball.”

The Lealie family of Spring Valley, Calif.: During the recent FriarFest event, Jazmine, 4, tugged at father Marc all the way into PETCO Park, with 2-year-old brother Quincy bouncing in stride, eyes bright and alive. “Man, she loves this place,” said Marc, formerly of Chicago. “I mean, Jazmine really loves PETCO Park, everything about it. These two are Junior Padres now. They come to games every Sunday. Her favorite player is Mike Cameron.”

Lorenzo Bundy, manager of Mexico at the Caribbean Series and manager of the Dodgers’ Triple-A Las Vegas affiliate: “I love the camaraderie and being around the guys. There is nothing like coming to the park and smelling the grass every day. It’s the greatest game in the world … and on any given day anybody can win. That’s how the ball bounces and that’s fun. They are probably going have to bury me in this uniform.”

JANUARY 2016 NEWSLETTER

Dear Players,

Hope you had a great Holiday Season and a safe brining in of the New Year!

A lot to talk about, so here we go….

In just over 4 weeks we will be holding our first event of the year at the Buck O’Neil Complex in Sarasota Florida. It’s the Orioles minor league camp with major league trimmings. You’ll love it. Great locker room, 4 pristine fields, state of the art batting tunnels, lunch on site in their cafeteria the whole nine yards.

If you didn’t get into the hotel we recommended give a call and I will see if I can still get you in. We should have at least 6 teams for this event. We are waiting to hear from some of the local teams as to whether or not they are joining us.

We will be the last group at the facility before the Orioles begin their Spring Season.

9 weeks later we return to event that put us on the adult baseball map, The 13th Annual Palm Beach Classic at Roger Dean Stadium and Complex in Jupiter Florida. The dates again are April 7-10 with an early arrival practice on Wednesday the 6th.

We have added a new hotel to the mix. As some of you know there is a new Marriott Courtyard directly across the street from the entrance to the Roger Dean. We tried last year to get a block of rooms but were unable to get a good rate.

Well they approached us this year with a comparable rate to the other hotel we use the Embassy Suites in PB Gardens. We love the Suites, and will continue to stay there because of the free breakfast, happy hour etc. and the fact its only one exit away on I-95….but if real convenience is what you are looking for…The Marriott is across the street. I will also try and set up some dinner specials in Abacoa for our campers so all they have to do is walk around the little village and relax every evening. The hotel listings on our site.

Many of you have been asking when the 4th Annual Rickwood Classic in Birmingham Alabama will be held. We just got the confirmed dates and they are June 24-26. I love that field. If you have not had the chance to play there yet, what are you waiting for? We can only take 4 teams and 2 have committed so far. Regardless if you are on a team, with a small group or alone….you owe it to yourself to play ball in America’s oldest park.

We put out a little sniff concerning the possibility of going to Holland to play ball this August. After discussing at length with several organizers in Holland we decided it would be better to have the trip in the summer of 2017. I won’t do a rush job. It will be an all-inclusive trip. The good news is there are 5 or 6 ball parks scattered throughout the Netherlands that are awesome. We will get there! So as far as an international trip this year we will go back to beautiful Tokyo in September and play at the Tokyo Dome again.

We had hoped by now to announce a new venue for this coming June, but the final details are not in stone just yet for the Twin Cities Classic. We hope to be playing at the new home of the Saint Paul Saints, CHS Field and then finish it up with a couple of games at Target Field.  We’ll send the email out as soon as we finalize the last details. Hopefully next week. There are only 60 spots available, so when it goes out reserve your space.

Well it finally got cold here in the Northeast, so my chores outside are done…heads up for some email promotions and keep an eye out for the Minnesota gig…

As always thanks for your support of PATP and we hope to see you in 2016!!

Dear Players,

Hope this email finds you and your loved ones doing well and ready for the Holidays. The weather here on Long Island has been extremely mild for this time of year and the Christmas spirit just hasn’t sunk in quite yet…

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your continued support of Play at the Plate. In 2015 we added 2 new venues, Newport and Toledo that were well attended and well received. We hopefully will be adding 2 new exciting places to play in 2016…more on that in a minute.

A few weeks ago we put out a sniff about the possibility of playing baseball in Amsterdam, Holland. It was very well received and we feel we could have a group of 12-14 players to form a team and play some games against good Dutch competition. That possibility is now a probability. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are 5 quaint beautiful baseball stadiums in the Netherlands. Along with many other first class recreational facilities to play at make this a no brainer. The question is, can we get it all together for a trip this coming August. I am working on it, but will not proceed unless everything is in place. If it does not happen this coming year it certainly will in 2017. So keep your eyes on future emails with details. I’m hoping for this year.

The second new destination of 2016 is Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have agreed to in principal with the Saint Paul Saints for a 2 or 3 day event in their beautiful brand new park, CHS Field. But the news gets better…..thanks to my working relationship with both the Saints and Twins from the ASG Camp with MLB a few years ago, I have convinced the Twins to come on board with this trip for a day at Target Field. Negotiations with the Twins are ongoing but quite favorable. If this trip interests you, (I know it does with a group from Sioux Falls) pencil in June 11-13. Yes the 13th is a Monday…I think this could be announced right after the holidays. We will treat it like any other MLB Camp….4 teams of 15…..tickets to games etc. 2 great venues, great city and the best steakhouse ever…Murray’s….

Well it’s December 14th and it’s 58 degrees outside, guess I’ll get some hacks in at the batting cage.

Again, my heartfelt thanks for your support, and I wish you all a Happy, Safe and Joyous Holiday Season and New Year!

Peace…
Greenie

Play at the Plate – Tokyo 2016 Registration

Tokyo Dome
Tokyo Dome

Just 3 weeks after returning from our spectacular trip to Tokyo, we are thrilled to announce the dates for next year’s touring and playing. They are September 12-19, 2016.

We will have a compete itinerary in a few weeks, but rest assured that this trip will include a game inside either the Tokyo Dome or Seibu Dome and perhaps even both venues. Playing in the Tokyo Dome was outrageous…it ranked up there for me just behind Fenway and Wrigley.

You’ll play 4 to 5 other games during the week at beautiful locations in and around Tokyo. I think a trip to Shimoda Bay could be in the works too for our exclusive practice session and team bonding trip.

Every year we go to Japan the trips get better and better.

The interest for this trip is very high and unfortunately the space is very limited. We are only taking 13 players plus guests. If you have always wanted to take a trip to Japan here is the perfect excuse. We will also have some of our dear Japanese friends showing the ladies around town for shopping excursions etc. There’s plenty to do for everyone.

The price for this year’s trip is $3,195…..that includes everything from the time you get off the plane to the time you fly back. Your airfare and alcohol is the only other cost…..all ground transportation, hotels, meals and baseball…..all of it is included in the fee.

You can reserve a spot with a $500 deposit with the balance to be paid by July 1, 2016.
Our great friends John Baessler and Mitz Tokuda will be handling all the scheduling and logistics.

I know it’s a long way off, but don’t wait to reserve your spot for the best baseball themed trip you’ll ever take…..

September Newsletter

Dear Players,

The past few weeks

In just two weeks we have been able to provide two unique baseball trips to beautiful areas just as scenic as they are historic. Last week we hosted the first Cardines Classic in beautiful Newport Rhode Island. Although Cardines Field is rich in history, it was our purpose to bring our players and their families to this nautical wonderland.  This event was designed to bring couples and families together to one of America’s most historic cities for sightseeing, shopping, a beautiful sunset cruise and of course some baseball. The response we received from all the players and wives from the weekend was so positive that we will have the dates for the next Cardines Classic very soon. In fact one of our groups may want to return next month if we can put it together. Again I would like to thank all the players and their significant others for a very uplifting three days.

Just one week later we found ourselves in another historic village….Cooperstown New York.

As I drive home and dictated this to our assistant Justin (who did a great job at the event), I am finally after many years leaving Cooperstown fulfilled, happy, and upbeat and hopeful that we can make this event grow to become the National Father/Son tournament in the nation. We had 24 fathers and their sons with us this weekend in not only a very competitive atmosphere, but one that showed that they understood that this trip was first and foremost about family.

I make this promise to my clients that I will work harder than ever to promote this event so that I may help bring more fathers, sons, and daughters together for years to come through baseball and play in historic Cooperstown. We enjoyed a trip to the Hall of Fame, great weather, great fields and just plain and simply put, a great 3 days. It took a long time for me personally to enjoy Cooperstown on a personal level, but this year I did, thanks to our campers. Next year’s dates will be announced very soon.

As most of you know I am heading to Japan this week for our annual trip. Many thanks to those players who have signed up and especially to John Baessler who organizes and runs the show over there. Without him it would never happen…We have an unbelievable week ahead of us…playing against Japanese Adult teams, playing in 2 domes and going to a Tokyo Giants game….keep an eye on Facebook for the pictures etc.

Sayonara for now

Dear Players,

Hope you are enjoying the last remnants of your summer. I’ve been relaxing the past few weeks after a hectic June and July that had 3 events in 4 weeks…A few weeks from now will see us at the busiest time of the year with 4 events in 6 weeks…including our annual trip to Japan.

Mud Hens Mania Recap

We had a great time in Toledo last month at our first annual Mud Hens Mania which took place at both the former and current home of the Hens. 5/3 Field in downtown Toledo was just spectacular. One of the nicest parks we have ever played in. The weather was great and the baseball was excellent. Thanks to Tim Egan who almost singlehandedly takes care of Ned Skeldon for keeping the field in such great shape. The “tournament” was won by the pool team led by yours truly. I want to thank: Brad Hodgson, Dan Ross, Jim Lewandowski and Ray Steiner for recruiting and managing their teams. We look forward to returning next year…

Cardines Classic

In 3 weeks we descend to another new venue, Cardines Field in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island for our first event at quaint Cardines Field. It’s a small event just 2 teams, but a sailboat ride around Narraganset and the beauty of the Cliff Walk, and the museums will make this event a very special one.  I am really looking forward to being up there. I fell in love with the town and look forward to returning for a long time.

Doubleday Fall Classic

The very next week it’s back to “The birthplace of baseball” Cooperstown N.Y. for our umpteenth trip. It’s the perfect father/child trip. Not only do we play on Doubleday Field but we get the Hall of Fame to ourselves for an hour after hours. The town is virtually ours. It’s a great place to be in the middle of September, spots are still available.

Japan

Then we are off to our 3rd annual trip to Japan. If it weren’t for the returning jet lag I’d go there 2 or 3 times a year. It’s fabulous. We have a full team and we are very excited to be playing against several good Japanese Adult teams. Add all the sightseeing and it really is a special time.

The Champions League

No rest for the very weary…right to New Orleans for our 3rd Annual Champions League tournament which features the best baseball we offer. If you have a group of players or a team, this is the place to play. Throw in all that New Orleans offers and it is one hell of a trip.

Well I hope your favorite team is doing well this year…mine is…..and your summer has been enjoyable and safe. Relax and take it easy these last few days of August and we’ll see you this fall. As always thanks for your support….

Dear Players,

Hope you are getting ready for a great holiday weekend.

Well I’m back on the road heading north after leaving Birmingham and playing 3 days at beautiful Rickwood Field. The Muckbaggers from Atlanta retained their title and now are 3 time champs. They beat a powerful New York Bison’s team 5 to 3 in the finals.

Except for yours truly pulling the plug on the afternoon games Saturday based on a horrific impending storm and playing in some rain, the storm didn’t materialize and Scotty boy caught some heat from some players. Deserved yes….but better to err on the side of caution. Next time I’ll just wait till it rains…..

I am heading north now to Cincinnati to drop off some equipment at the University of Cincinnati that is needed for the All Star Fantasy Camp. I am privileged to be working with MLB for the 6th straight year and this year I will have my brothers and nephew along with some great friends from the area to share the experience with.

Some of you have been following my art project on the side of my garage…The Green Monster and scoreboard. Well I picked up the final piece to the project yesterday in Campbellsville Ky. Met a really cool guy who is a picker and a singer songwriter…cool dude named Glen Yoder…the final piece is a pristine 3 by 3 light able Citgo sign that will go on the roof of the garage…It’s frickin awesome. So all you Facebook friends get ready for the final installment…might need to have a party…

Later today after dropping off the helmets and such in Cincy I will head to Toledo to drop off the trailer at Ned Skeldon Stadium in preparation for our Mud Hens Mania event in late July…can’t wait….might check out the Bulls/Mud hens game tonight.

Well I just fixed the trailer lights and the road is a calling……see some of you in Cincy, then Toledo….have a safe Holiday weekend….remember….light the firecracker…then throw the firecracker….be safe.

Happy Birthday to America!

Speak to you soon,
Greenie
